How to Prepare for a House Cleaning Service (Ancaster & Hamilton Guide)

Hiring a house cleaning service for the first time, or even the tenth time, can feel like a bit of a mystery. Do you clean before they arrive? What exactly gets cleaned? What if you have pets or specific requests?
As the co-owner of Cascade Cleaning Company, a residential cleaning service serving the Hamilton area, I've walked into hundreds of homes. And I can tell you honestly: a little preparation on your end makes a significant difference, not just for our team, but for what you get out of the clean. Here's exactly what to do.
1. Declutter Before We Arrive
This is the single most impactful thing you can do, and it's the one most clients skip.
When surfaces are covered in mail, toys, or random items, we have to work around them rather than clean beneath and behind them. That slows us down and means you're getting a less thorough clean.
The goal isn't a spotless home before we arrive. That would defeat the purpose. The goal is a clear home. Think:
Empty the kitchen sink (or at least stack dishes to one side)
Put laundry in a basket - it doesn't need to be sorted or clean, just off the floor and furniture
Clear countertops of anything that doesn't need to be there
Pick up items from the floor in rooms you want thoroughly cleaned
Even 15 minutes of decluttering before an appointment can meaningfully improve the result and keep your bill from creeping up.
2. Know What's Included (and What Isn't)
One of the most common sources of disappointment after a clean is mismatched expectations. Standard residential cleaning covers surfaces, counters, floors, bathrooms, fixtures, and general tidying. You want to double check what that includes, and a good cleaning service will provide a cleaning checklist so you know exactly what you're getting.
Here's what typically requires a separate request or added cost:
Windows: Interior and exterior window washing is almost always a separate service
Dishes: We can wash dishes, but you need to request this at the time of booking
Laundry: Same, possible, but not assumed
Deep cleaning or post-construction cleaning: These are different services from a standard maintenance clean
If you're unsure what's included, just ask when you book. A good cleaning company will walk you through it clearly. There's no such thing as a silly question here - unclear expectations are far more frustrating for everyone than a quick conversation upfront.
3. Tell Us About Your Pets
We love animals. But pet hair is a real factor in how long a clean takes and what's
achievable.

If you have dogs or cats, please let us know when booking - not so we judge you, but so we can allocate the right amount of time and set realistic expectations. Even with a thorough clean, we cannot guarantee a completely fur-free home in one visit, especially in high-shedding seasons or if furniture is heavily used by pets.
Knowing in advance also means we can bring the right tools and plan accordingly, rather than discovering mid-clean that we're dealing with three golden retrievers' worth of fur on a white sectional.
4. Communicate the Details Before We Show Up
The more context you give us before the appointment, the better the outcome. Here's what genuinely helps our team:
Parking: Is there free street parking, or do we need coins or a pass? This sounds minor but it affects our arrival time and adds friction if we're not prepared.
The last time it was professionally cleaned: A home that hasn't had a deep clean in two years needs a different approach than one maintained monthly.
Allergies and product sensitivities or preferences: If you or a family member reacts to certain chemicals or fragrances, tell us. We can adjust. If you'd prefer eco-friendly products only, let us know!
Specific areas of concern: Don't assume we'll know what matters most to you. One of our clients, Jamil, mentioned when booking that his toddler had drawn on a couple of walls. This is something we'd never have known to address otherwise. We were able to tackle it specifically because he told us.
Your home is personal. We treat it that way, but we need your input to do it well.
5. Set the Space Up for an Efficient Visit
Think about the logistics of the day itself. A few things that make a big difference:
Be home or arrange access clearly: Make sure we know how to get in and that entry is straightforward
Keep the space clear of other contractors or activity: One of our best recent cleans was a move-out job in Stoney Creek. Our client Nicole made sure the house was fully vacated and that movers had already finished before we arrived. With nothing in the way and no coordination needed, we completed a full house clean in 3.5 hours. She was thrilled, and so were we. Trying to clean around active movers or contractors is genuinely difficult and almost always leads to a longer job and a more stressful experience for everyone.
A Note for First-Timers
If you've never hired a cleaning service before and you're on the fence, I want to encourage you:
Home cleaning isn't a luxury reserved for wealthy households.
We work with clients at a range of budgets. If you can only afford a couple of hours, we can book you into an hourly clean and tackle your highest-priority areas first, whether that's the kitchen, the bathrooms, or wherever the chaos feels worst. Many of our clients come to us during genuinely overwhelming seasons of life: a new baby, a busy stretch at work, a health issue, a move.
You don't need a reason beyond "I need help and I want my home to feel clean."
The best version of this service is a partnership. You do a little prep, communicate clearly, and we take care of the rest. When that happens, the results speak for themselves.
